Audi key types through the years
Audi has used different key platforms across its range. The older your Audi, the simpler the key is likely to be, but there are exceptions.
Not sure which key type your Audi uses? Send a photo of your key alongside your model and year and we will identify it.
- Older Audis, especially earlier A4 and A6 models, used basic transponder keys with a chip matched to the immobiliser.
- Many mid-range Audis use a remote key or flip key, where the remote control and transponder are programmed as a pair.
- Newer Audis, including recent A4, A6, Q5 and Q7 models, use a smart or proximity key for keyless entry and push-button start.
- Some of the newer high-security Audi platforms can be dealer-only, and we will tell you honestly if yours is one of them.
