Kia key types by model generation
Kia has introduced different key systems over the years as its models have evolved. The key type your Kia needs depends on when it was made.
If you are unsure what key your Kia has, send a photo of it with your model and year and we will work it out.
- Older Kias often use a basic transponder key, a metal key with a chip programmed to the immobiliser.
- Many Cerato and Rio models from the mid-era use a remote key or flip key, where the remote and transponder are programmed together.
- Newer Sportage and Carnival models use a smart key or proximity fob for keyless entry and push-button start.
- The latest Kia platforms can sometimes be dealer-only for key programming, and we will tell you honestly if that is the case.
