Toyota key types across the eras
Which key your Toyota uses depends mostly on its age. Knowing the type helps us quote you faster and get the right key ready.
If you are not sure which one you have, send a photo of the key along with your model and year and we will work it out.
- Older Toyotas often use a basic transponder key, a metal key with a chip inside that has to be matched to the immobiliser.
- Many mid-era Corollas, Camrys and HiLux utes use a remote or flip key, where the remote and the transponder are programmed together.
- Newer Toyotas, including a lot of RAV4s and recent HiLux and Camry models, use a smart or proximity key for keyless entry and push-button start.
- The newest high-security Toyota platforms can be dealer-only, and we will tell you honestly if yours is one of them.
