Mazda key types through the generations
Mazda has used different key systems as its model range has evolved. The year and model of your Mazda tells us which key type you need.
If you are not sure what key you have, send a photo of it along with your model and year and we will identify it.
- Older Mazdas often use a basic transponder key, a metal key with a chip that is programmed to the immobiliser.
- Many Mazda 2 and 3 models from the mid-era use a remote key or flip key, where the remote and transponder are coded together.
- Newer Mazda 6 and CX-5 models use a smart key or proximity fob for keyless entry and push-button start.
- The newest Mazda platforms can sometimes be dealer-only for key programming, and we will tell you honestly if that is the case.
